How To Tackle Driver Compliance Issues With Bite-Size ELearning

If LGV/HGV drivers fail to comply with regulations, directives, and best practice, this can result in compliance issues for the employer. This can also pose safety risks for drivers and other road users. Could bite-size eLearning be the solution?

What is “bite-size” eLearning? Bite-size learning is a way of delivering content to learners in small “bite-size” chunks (usually no more than eight minutes long). Bite-size eLearning is where this training is delivered using digital or online methods. It is a self-led type of training, where learners work through the training at a pace that suits them.

This style of learning can fit easily around busy working schedules and is ideal for mobile learners (as it can be delivered via phones and tablets). It also gives learners control. They can go back and review or revisit information if needed. This improves knowledge retention – there is a 50% higher retention on bitesize learning compared to traditional learning. Bite-size learning is also useful for filling or refreshing knowledge and performance gaps.

Applying up-to-date learning principles
The workplace transport training sector is not always as advanced as the broader education sector when it comes to applying human learning methodologies. However, eLearning is underpinned by the latest research. It is designed to emphasise activity and engagement. Low levels of engagement lead to low levels of learning transfer, so eLearning naturally increases learning transfer by increasing engagement. Most eLearning tends to last 30 to 60 minutes. However, bite-size eLearning uses blasts of just one to 15 minutes. Studies show that learners focus best and retain information better from short bursts of learning.

Engaging the brain differently
The most effective bite-size eLearning will have an interactive element. For example, using tools such as flip cards, match-up exercises, and role-play. It should also appeal to audio-visual and tactile senses. This accesses different areas of the brain and suits diverse types of learners. For instance, eLearning could include video and infographics as well as spoken word.

RTITB’s custom micro eLearning solution
RTITB recently developed a suite of bite-size eLearning for the 5000+ drivers of an international logistics company. This helped modernise the learning experience and improve engagement with eight-minute mini-modules. Topics included speeding, coupling and uncoupling, record keeping, why breaks matter, working time directive, rest periods, effects of fatigue, daily walkaround checks, and periods of availability.

However, RTITB can develop bite-size eLearning to meet the business’s specific requirements. The eLearning is designed in consultation with the customers and delivered as a full service. This includes storyboarding, technical authoring, graphic design, testing, proof-reading, video scripting, shooting, and editing, and the hosting of the course on RTITB’s eLearning platform.

The modules can be designed to be either standalone or delivered as a series. Importantly, all the mini-modules conclude with a short multiple-choice assessment to help confirm learning.

This flexible, bite-size eLearning approach may be helpful when addressing compliance issues. For example, drivers can be given
a particular mini-module reminding them of the rules if an issue occurs. Then, if the same issue arises again, they can be provided with a follow-up module. This can be designed to introduce the impacts of non-compliance, to help positively change their behaviour.
